DIY Website – Step 1

This tutorial is for anyone who wants to setup a completely free website with no domain name registration necessary, no website hosting necessary and using a FREE online platform.

Many clubs, small business owners and those on a strictly limited budget start easily in this way.

PLEASE NOTE: Even though it’s completely free, the website we build with you here is fully customizable and able to be ported easily to your own domain if you already have one OR if you might like to get one in the future.

For those who already have their own domain registered, have paid for a hosting package and want to do it yourself, go to http://south-gippsland.net/building-a-website-on-your-own-domain/ for full video tutorial instructions.

Let’s Get Started STEP 1

a) Have Access To An Email Address (essential)

You will need an email address to be able to register your free website. If you don’t have one already, it’s advisable to get a FREE email account that you can access via the web from anywhere in the world.

  • Google search for “FREE email” or
  • Go to somewhere like Yahoo

b) Use A Great Browser (preferable)

Get Firefox, Opera or Google Chrome

  • These are by far the best browsers to use for any website building. Opera, Chrome and Firefox provide FREE downloadable plugins designed especially for web developers. You can check how responsive your theme is and fix html code directly from your browser.
  • Firefox is fast, provides you with a high level of safety while surfing the net, can be customized with ‘skins’ to make it look unique, has less problems than Internet Explorer and if you’ve never used it for general browsing, is well worth a try.
  • Click http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ to download.

c) Choose Your Website Name Wisely (important but changeable)

Decide on the name of your website. This part is REALLY IMPORTANT and is a part of what we call ‘search engine optimization’. If you want people to find your new website, think of as many words or phrases that people might type into a search box in order to find YOU, what you are SELLING or the TOPIC you are focusing on. Use some of those words in your website name, but be thoughtful to make it easy for people to remember and to type.

Don’t make these mistakes – Here is a list of very funny but thoughtless choices for website names. http://www.boredpanda.com/worst-domain-names/

FOR BUSINESS WEBSITES – If it is to be used for business purposes, use your registered business name and search to find out if that particular name is still available as a Domain Name. We highly recommend you think carefully about this step just in case you want to upgrade your free website to a proper business one at any time in the future. For example, my registered business is ‘lifegames’, so I have registered the domain http://lifegames.com.au but our website design site here deliberately utilizes a more specific region http://south-gippsland.net

PLEASE NOTE: You might also like to consider the type of keywords people would use to search for what you have to offer. I find this google keyword tool is extremely useful. But for the moment we’ll just work with your free website and proper domain registration will be covered towards the end of the course.

FOR PERSONAL WEBSITES AND BLOGS –  Choose something that relates to the main topic you will be writing about, or just use your own name.

When you’re ready, move on to Step 2
